Care Commission Scotland upgrade NFA Scotland to ‘Very Good’

Thursday 24 March 2016

We take immense pride in the quality of our regional fostering services, and constantly strive to improve in all areas of our organisation. That’s why we’re delighted to tell you that NFA Scotland received a ‘Very Good’ rating as part of the latest inspection by Care Commission Scotland – continuing a run of successful inspections which began in December 2010.

On 6 November 2017, Care Commission Scotland completed an announced short notice inspection at our regional fostering offices in Stirling. After speaking with our management team, as well as foster carers and children, the Care Inspectorate graded our service as ‘Very Good’, both in terms of the quality of care and support, and our effective management and leadership.

Among other things, the Inspectorate was impressed by our ‘systematic approach to identifying appropriate fostering families for children’, as well as the level of support and training we provide to our foster carers. They also commented on our ‘good use of management systems to monitor the quality of work within the service’ – highlighting our commitment to ensuring that foster carers are always kept up to date and have access to the appropriate training and resources.

2017 marks a return to a ‘Very Good’ rating for NFA Scotland, with the quality of our service showing an improvement since the last inspection in 2015. Our people work hard every day to ensure our foster families get the help and support they need, and we’re delighted that their efforts have been recognised in the most recent Care Commission Scotland inspection.

Above all else, however, we’re proud to hear what our foster care families have to say about us, and how much they value our service. As part of their inspection, Care Commission Scotland spoke with three foster care families, as well as four looked after children, and all carers said they were happy with the quality of support they receive.

According to the report, one fostering family said: “The NFA training we receive is very high quality. I have completed the Carer Academy which gives a deeper understanding of the courses offered and stronger confidence to deal with children’s issues.”

In its discussions with NFA Scotland foster families, the Care Inspectorate also found that “information about children’s needs was usually available in advance of children being placed, supporting the foster carer to make decisions about their capacity to meet those needs. Foster carers felt well informed about the child’s plan and were supported by the agency to raise any issues.”
