Find out if you could be a foster carer
In a few simple questions, you’ll know if you’re suitable to apply to become a foster carer.
The first step to discussing trauma with your foster child is to understand trauma itself. You should have an understanding of the causes, related issues like trauma bonds, symptoms and measures to help your foster child overcome trauma like attachment therapy. Once you know the subject, you can feel more comfortable and confident discussing the issue with your foster child, helping them feel more at ease.
When discussing trauma, make sure they will be given your full attention and will be listened to. It’s important to establish open lines of communication and encourage your foster child to ask questions and express their concerns. Whatever they tell you, remember to remind them that they are in a safe space and that any feelings they have are perfectly normal and valid.
