Many foster children go on to be hugely successful in a whole range of careers. In fact, a number of famous stars have spent time in care or the foster system. Here are ten movers and shakers who were fostered or adopted before going on to take the world by storm.
Steve Jobs
Where would we be without our iPods and iPhones? Steve Jobs is an inspirational figure who as the co-founder and CEO of Apple Computer revolutionised technology.  Thanks to his innovations, Jobs became a multimillionaire by the age of 30. As a baby, he was adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs and raised in Los Altos in California’s Silicon Valley.
Marilyn Monroe
The silver screen’s most iconic star, Marilyn Monroe delivered dazzling performances in films such as Some Like It Hot. The blonde bombshell then known as Norma Jeane spent time in various foster homes up until the age of eleven.
John Lennon
As a member of the Beatles, the pop group who racked up a whopping twenty number one singles, John Lennon is one of the most influential figures in popular music. From the age of four, Lennon was fostered by his Uncle George and Aunt Mimi. It was his aunt who taught him to play the banjo and the rest, as they say, is history.
Jamie Foxx
An uber-talented actor and versatile performer, Jamie Foxx has starred on the big screen as everyone from Ray Charles to Django, the snappy-dressing gun-toting hero of Quentin Tarantino’s latest film. When Foxx was 7 months old, his parents divorced and his grandparents, Mark and Esther Talley, adopted him.
Cher
Actress and singer Cher has had a hugely successful career spanning over 50 years. As well as starring in classic films such as Mermaids and Moonstruck, Cher has also enjoyed musical success with hits such as I Got You Babe and Believe.  Due to financial pressures and illness, Cher was placed briefly into foster care by her mother.
James Dean
Hollywood’s original bad-boy sex symbol, James Dean was a fiercely talented actor who played the lead roles in genre-defining films Rebel Without a Cause and East of Eden. When he was five years old Dean’s mother died and he was fostered by his aunt and uncle who lived on a farm in Indiana.
Nelson Mandela
Nobel Peace Prize winner and anti-Apartheid leader, Nelson Mandela is one the most important political figures of the Twentieth Century.  When his father died when he was 9 years old, Nelson was fostered by the chief of his tribe.
Willie Nelson
Country music superstar and all round nice guy Willie Nelson reached stardom with tracks such as Crazy and Always on My Mind. Nelson grew up in foster care after his mother abandoned him soon after giving birth. Nelson went onto to live with extended family members until finding success as a songwriter and performer.
Eddie Murphy
Actor and comedian, Eddie Murphy has starred in some of the most popular franchises ever including Beverley Hills Cop and the Nutty Professor. Most importantly, to anyone with children at least, he provides the hilarious voice of Donkey from Shrek. Along with his brother Charlie, Murphy spent 12 months in foster care after his father died and his mother was too ill to take care of him.
Pierce Brosnan
Having starred as everyone’s favourite secret agent, James Bond, Pierce Brosnan is a hugely popular actor. His roles, in everything from Flash Gordon to Mama Mia, have seen him garner legions of fans. The Irish actor spent several years in the care of various friends and family after his father left his mother and she went to nursing school.
