Wales is a beautiful place for families to live and to visit. Steeped in history, nature and wildlife, Wales is a huge playground for children. We take a look at our favourite fun family days out in North, South and Mid Wales that won’t break the bank.

5 Family Days Out In North Wales

 

Try a Tonguetwister at Llanfair PG Station

North wales is a village and community on Anglesey, home to the longest recognised place name in Europe (llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch) which makes it a very popular with visitors. If you get tired of saying llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch it is more commonly known as Llanfair PG. The Llanfair PG Victorian railway station is the most popular attraction in the village, drawing in tourists posing next to the station sign. You can also have ‘passports’ stamped at the local post office.

Get Lost in the Newborough Forest and Llanddwyn

The Newborough Forest is also on the island of Anglsey. The forest is packed full of tall Corsican pine trees and is perfect for nature spotting including horses, skylarks marsh orchids. Take a walk through the forest and follow the path down on to Llanddwyn Beach.

Admire the View at Loggerheads Country Park

Loggerheads is a beautiful 80acre country park with well-marked discovery trails and footpaths. A day out in Loggerheads is great for views, fresh air and plenty of exercise.

The country park is free, but parking is pay and display at around £1.30 for half a day

Climb Above the Clouds on Snowdon Mountain Railway

A trip to north Wales is not complete without paying a visit to Wales’ highest mountain, Snowdon. The Snowdon Mountain Railway is a great experience, promising to take you on the journey of a lifetime to the rooftop of Wales. Enjoy the views and scenery on the train before stopping for a hot chocolate in the café at the top.

Point Out Puffins on the Puffin Island Pleasure Cruise

Take a guided boat trip around Puffin Island, a Special Protection Area just off the coast of Anglesey. Puffin island is home to a huge amount of wildlife, which you will be able to spot from the boat. Species living on the island include Great Cormorants, Guillemot, Razorbill and Puffins. From the RSPB-friendly tour boat you will also see a lot of wildlife in the sea and it is a popular fishing area.

The Museum of Welsh Life (also referred to as the St Fagans National History Museum) is one of Europe’s leading open-air museums. Voted as one of the best free places to go by readers of ‘NetMums’, St Fagans is extremely family-oriented with educational and fun activities for children of all ages. The museum itself is based around St Fagans castle and comprises over 40 historic buildings to demonstrate how Welsh families have lived, worked and played through the ages. There are animals that can be petted and fed as well as a playground.

The museum is free to enter, but parking is £3.50 per day.

Become a Secret Agent on the Cardiff Bay Walking Spy Trail

Follow signs and solve clues to navigate your way around Cardiff Bay. Childrens imaginations will run wild as you are led around the bay trying to discover some top secret MI5 documents. The trail is 2.5miles long and will take around 2-3hours to complete.

Play Farmers at the Greenmeadow Community Farm

Greenmeadow has been a working farm for over 250 years. Showcasing a wide range of farmyard animals, the farm offers daily activities for the public such as milking demonstrations, animal feeding, tractor rides. Greenmeadow also hosts special events throughout the year around crafts, health and exercise as well as a santa’s grotto at Christmas.

Walk On Water at Penarth Pier

Penarth Pier is one of Wales’ finest piers. Opened in 1895, the pier is made of cast iron and is 750feet long. The pier has recently undergone renovation, and now offers a cinema as well as a range of exhibitions.

The pier is free and open all year round. Free parking is available nearby.

Spot Seals at Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park

Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park is a farm park overlooking the Cardigan Island nature reserve. Visitors can admire beautiful scenery, breathtaking views from dramatic cliffs as well as animal spotting. Cardigan Island is home to bottlenose dolphins, grey seals, porpoises, seabirds, and much more. The farm park is also home to farmyard animals including donkies, pigs, ponies, rabbits and goats.

Prices are £2.90 for children and £3.90 for teenagers and adults.

Go Digging For Gold at the Dolaucothi Gold Mines

The Dolaucothi Gold Mines are the only known Roman Gold Mines in Britain. Guided tours around the gold mines take you back to experience the conditions of the gold mine workings. Educational and fun, children can have a go at gold panning and searching for real gold.

There is a camping and caravan site nearby if you want to extend your stay.

Entrance to the gold mines costs £2.60 for children and £5.45 for adults.

Dolphin Spotting at New Quay

New Quay is a beautiful seaside town on Cardigan Bay in West Wales. Key attractions in New Quay are the picturesque harbour and sandy beach. One of the most popular things to do in New Quay Harbour is to take a dolphin-spotting boat trip.

Run Wild in Coed y Brenin Forest Park

Coed y Brenin Forest Park is a hub of activity in the forest. Hire bikes to ride one of the 7 bike tracks (more suitable for older children & teenagers). Take a long walk in the forest; follow the audio trails or take the animal puzzle trail for an animal-led walk. There is also a huge play area for children, as well as a ‘free play’ area where they can make dens and dam streams.

The forest park is free, but some of the activities (such as bike hire) involve costs.

Swat Up in the National Library, Aberystwyth

Don’t let your children be put off by the name, the National Library in Aberystwyth is so much more than just a library. As well as being home to the largest collection of books, manuscripts, maps, pictures and photographs, the National Library also offers tours, exhibitions, films and more.

Entrance to the library is free and free guided tours take place every Monday at 11am and Wednesday at 2:15pm.
