Proud to be a Positive Role Model

Thursday 10 September 2020

From the age of 12, Jo from Leicestershire had had a difficult childhood growing up and was placed with different foster cares.

Now a successful property developer with both her children having grown up, she decided that she wanted to give back to those in the same position she was in herself years ago and applied to be a foster carer.

Jo now fosters teenage girls and is proud to act as a positive role model, showing them that that despite difficult starts in life, you can achieve. Having been through a journey similar to themselves, she said she “can see life in care through their eyes, put myself in their shoes – when I tell them that I grew up in care too, it’s like a key opening a lock and there’s an instant bond.”

“I have come out the other side as a completely different person, and becoming a foster carer myself has given me a sense of purpose – helping others by understanding their needs and underlying issues means my own experiences have not been in vain.”

Jo fosters through Jay Fostering, part of the National Fostering Group – If you would like more information about becoming a foster carer, visit www.fostercarers.com.
