The Prince’s Trust “Get Into” scheme develops young people’s skills

The National Fostering Agency (NFA) recently attended a Princes Trust presentation in London where young people shared their experiences of being part of the “Get Into Admin” scheme.
“Get Into” involves short vocation courses that develop young people’s skills in a specific sector, aimed at young people aged 16 to 25, who are work ready but do not have vocational skills. Sectors are varied, and cover areas such as sport, construction, logistics, cooking and customer services, to name but a few.
The schemes deliver a mixture of practical training and experience that will enable those involved to get a job, as well as providing them with the opportunity to meet potential employers. Courses vary in length, from between two and six weeks, and participants are given six months support after the course has finished to help them back into employment or further training.
The young people who had been involved in the “Get Into Admin” course spoke of their experience working in different business areas where they were given the opportunity to get a rounded idea of what is involved in a career in administration. Backgrounds and previous levels of experience varied greatly, some having completed degrees, others with long gaps in their CVs and some at a much earlier stage in their careers.
Their enthusiasm for the scheme was plain to see in their individual speeches, and it was evident that the programme had made a big impact on both their understanding of the admin role and their confidence in their own abilities.
It was also evident that employees of GAP, where the young people had worked, had benefited just as much from the scheme having expressed how they would miss having the young people around.
Having seen what an important impact the “Get Into” scheme can have first hand, NFA encourages any young people in or leaving care to apply for any of the programmes run by the Prince’s Trust, should they be looking to enhance their employability skills. Travel expenses are covered and it is also possible to do a taster day beforehand, to help in making a decision about joining a particular course.
