Find out if you could be a foster carer
In a few simple questions, you’ll know if you’re suitable to apply to become a foster carer.
Having “the talk” with your foster child and discussing sex is a conversation that is necessary for their development as well as for their health and wellbeing. It’s just as much about being responsible and safe as it is about understanding the changes within themselves, both physically and mentally.
You should start by relating to yourself and how everyone undergoes these changes at a similar point in their lives. Discuss the topic openly and honestly, as well as actively listen to anything they have to say and any questions they may have. Have conversations around the essential topics of consent, contraception, STD prevention and the basics of sex. You should also talk openly about abstinence and the different sexual orientations.
It’s important to remember that the purpose of the discussion is so your foster child can make informed decisions that relate to their bodies and sex. Remember, this could be an uncomfortable conversation for your foster child, so encourage them to ask questions and answer them honestly. If you find it difficult to have the conversation on your own, you can involve another adult, or healthcare professional, who will talk to them also.
