Foster children have specific needs and to ensure you’re giving your foster child the support they need, it’s crucial you address them. To address your foster child’s needs, there are several strategies you can use:
- Create a safe home environment – A safe home environment is one that is stable, affectionate and also gives your foster child some of their own privacy. Over time, your foster child will gain a sense of security and belonging.
- Gain support from your friends and family – your friends and family are essential to help you support your foster child. They can get involved with your foster children and help your foster child feel part of the family, encouraging them to build on their sense of belonging and security.
- Seek training and support – We offer ongoing training and support for all our foster carers. With peer groups and social workers on call, you will always have someone to talk to about giving your foster child the right support.
- Practice open and honest communication – Encourage open communication about your foster child’s experiences, as well as communicating yours. This helps them feel heard and understood as well as helping them relate to you as well.
