Getting to know your foster child

The first thing to do so you can get to know your foster child is to spend one-to-one time with them. When you make time, ensure it’s doing things that involve things they love to do. For example, you may choose to go out for lunch with them and let them choose where to go. These activities help to build trust and give them an informal setting so they can open up and bond with you.

Any activities are appropriate for getting to know your foster child, so long as they’re any combination of interactive, educational and fun. These activities could be:

  • Cooking or baking together.
  • Playing chess or other board games.
  • Sharing a hobby that they have.
  • Exercising or practising a sport together.
  • Gardening together.

All of these activities will create a relaxed and fun environment where your foster child can feel safe opening up and letting you in – especially if it’s an activity that they are passionate about.
