How do I help my foster child deal with tough occasions such as Christmas and birthdays?

Through not being able to spend time with their birth families, Christmas and birthdays can be tricky times of year for your foster child. To ensure your foster child has the best time on these days, it is important they feel included and part of the family. Opening presents together, participating in games, and arranging days out for their birthday are all ways to help them feel included and loved.

If they are able to, you may be able to help them come up with a plan to self-regulate. For example, having space in the bedroom if being with all the family is too overwhelming. It is important that their voice is heard.
