Introducing family members to your new foster child

Introducing your foster child to family members is a big step in your care for them. You should begin by communicating with your family members that you will be introducing your foster child to them. Tell your family about your foster child’s interests, hobbies and who they are as an individual, to help conversation flow and make the introductions smoother.

Ensure that the environment is warm and welcoming, so they can feel safe and comfortable on arrival. When you introduce your foster child, let them take the lead in the interaction, and give them the freedom to withdraw from the situation if they need to. Make sure you are there to address any questions or concerns they may have, providing guidance, support and your presence so your foster child feels comfortable and safe throughout the interaction.

It can also be a good idea to start small, introducing them to a couple of close family members (perhaps others with kids the same age as them, if possible) first, as it can be overwhelming to meet a lot of people all at once.
