Skills to Foster training

As one of the UK’s most experienced fostering agencies, we’re committed to excellence. We want to give you all the skills you need to be your best.

Free essential training for foster carers

Your mandatory 3-day ‘Skills to Foster’ training is held either online or at a venue in your region. It equips you with essential skills required to care for a vulnerable child or young person.

Like all our training, it’s delivered free of charge at a local venue or online.

When I joined National Fostering Group, the training I received helped me to identify my skills and strengths to build healthy relationships with children and young people in my care. The support groups are a great asset to foster carers to gain extra knowledge or just a friendly chat. All of this combined together becomes a very important part of your family as a foster carer, especially if you are a lone carer.

What you learn on Skills to Foster

Skills to Foster is the first mandatory training course, and you’ll complete it while you’re still in the approval process.

The course also provides you with an opportunity to meet other foster carers, who can share their expertise. The course is fun, informative and offers real insight into what lies ahead.

Skills to Foster curriculum

The training course consists of seven modules covering everything you need to know to prepare for life as a foster carer and a detailed understanding of what is required:

  • What do foster carers do?
  • Identity
  • Working with others
  • Understanding children in foster care
  • Safer caring
  • Transitions
  • My family fosters
  • Attachment styles

You’ll complete additional mandatory training once you’ve been approved as a foster carer.

Also, there will be opportunities in the future to take optional courses, including in more specialised topics, like supporting young people with Autism and Asperger’s or parent and child fostering.
